CentroMed Community Health and Wellness Center - San Antonio, Texas
CentroMed is a non-profit health organization providing medical, dental, mental health, nutrition and social services to economically disadvantaged, homeless and medically underserved people in the heart of San Antonio’s low-income neighborhoods. Though services are provided throughout San Antonio, there was a gap in service to residents of the southern edge of the city. Patients traveled distances of 3-5 miles for general services or wellness education, and 15-20 miles for dialysis treatments, which sometimes requires more than one treatment in a single day. In addition to the lack of health services, south San Antonio was also lacking in any community event space.
CentroMed and The Neenan Company developed plans for a Community Health Clinic (CHC) and a Wellness Center to serve this area. An impoverished neighborhood has been transformed to a center of community pride and compassion.
The Southside Medical Clinic provides many services to the community, including family practice, pediatrics, dentistry, women’s health, laboratory and expanded dialysis services through more than 60 points of care. The integrated Wellness Center provides the community with wellness education, fitness equipment, a gymnasium and a community room for neighborhood events and functions. CentroMed is now the largest CHC in the state of Texas, estimating it will serve well over 50,000 patients visits each year.
