Located in the middle of the San Luis Valley of south central Colorado, San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center (SLVRMC) serves 40,000 people, in dozens of communities, covering 8,000 square miles (the size of New Jersey).
SLVRMC serves the poorest areas in the state of Colorado, with a Medicaid percentage twice as high as the state average. The renovation and addition project transformed community perceptions of care such that commercial insurance utilization rose 20% in the first six months after completion of the renovation.
SLVRMC’s goals were to establish separate inpatient, outpatient and clinical areas; to bring the physician clinic on campus; improve access to ancillary services; modernize the facility and improve its image. With scarce available funds to enhance revenue, SLVRMC also wanted to create an environment to aid in recruitment and retention of physicians and staff.
